01 / Executive Overview

One architecture.
One continental system.

Europe has national energy strategies, development programmes and extensive electricity infrastructure. What it lacks is a unified architecture defining how these systems should operate together as one continental energy system.

The Continental Layer is a completed System of Systems Architecture for Europe's energy system through 2050, designed in its entirety by a single architect — Mateusz Chrzanowski.

The project covers all 27 European Union Member States and establishes an integrated architecture encompassing electricity generation, demand, continental transmission, energy storage, strategic reserves, control, operational coordination, governance, economics, financing and programme implementation.

02 / The Architecture

Designed as
one system.

Generation, reconstructed.

The architecture begins with a country-by-country reconstruction of Europe's energy landscape.

Existing generation sources, national development plans and future electricity requirements were examined and integrated into a common architectural framework. Where those resources and plans were insufficient to fulfil the requirements of the continental system, additional energy-generation projects were designed.

The resulting project currently incorporates more than 800 individual energy sources across Europe, bringing together existing infrastructure, nationally planned investments and new generation projects developed as part of the architecture.

The sources form part of a deliberately designed continental generation architecture, in which their productive capability, technology, geography and role in the wider system are considered together.

Beyond generation.

At its centre is a dedicated Continental Backbone — a strategic transmission architecture connecting geographically distributed generation resources with demand centres across Europe.

The design integrates continental energy storage, strategic reserves, source interfaces, conversion infrastructure, communications, control and system-wide coordination.

National electricity systems retain their operational autonomy. The Continental Layer introduces a common architectural level above them, performing functions that cannot be delivered effectively through isolated national systems and conventional cross-border interconnections alone.

The project also encompasses the legal, economic, financing and governance structures required to organise the programme, together with an implementation architecture extending to 2050.

03 / Architectural Authorship

One architect.
One integrated design.

The entire architecture was conceived, developed and designed by one System of Systems Architect — Mateusz Chrzanowski.

From the reconstruction of national energy systems and the design of additional generation sources to the Continental Backbone, strategic reserves, system coordination and programme architecture, the project follows one coherent set of architectural principles and decisions.

It brings together electrical engineering, energy systems, infrastructure planning, systems architecture, industrial development, economics and governance within a single design.

It is not a collection of independent national projects assembled under a common title.

It is one architecture, designed as one system.

04 / Project Status

Architectural design
complete.

The architectural project is complete. Its comprehensive technical documentation — expected to approach 1,500 pages — is now undergoing final DTP production.

The publication will bring together the chapters, national architecture documents, infrastructure maps, analytical results and supporting technical materials.
